You make some good points, Suzan. Repeat offenders do tend to escalate their behavior with each offense. Most offenders who are caught have already committed over 100 offenses on average. Laws do need to be changed, but laws alone do not protect children. Our best defense for our children is our awareness, good judgment and good safety habits. Thanks for your comments and wishes.

Thank you for sharing this lovely tribute - it is so very touching. Such a tragic loss. I know you knew her and her family. I'm sending you love and healing too. I really appreciate your encouraging parents to help their children learn how to set boundaries and to trust their intuition. It may also be important for kids to enroll in self-defense classes at an early age as another means to protect themselves (sad that it comes to this). I also think the laws need to be changed for sex offenders (at least for a percentage of them).
When it is evident that the sex offender cannot be rehabilitated - such as Chelsea's killer (when they show no remorse - cannot take responsibility for their actions - they will soon be out looking for their next victims). Just giving out their names to the community, and purportedly keeping close tabs on these criminals doesn't seem to work. How many more innocent lives sacrificed will it take for us to wake up. When they are watched in their home, they will go to the woods and commit their acts there. We must change the laws for sex offenders who will not respond to treatment. Precious young lives are at stake! I'm curious to know your thoughts, Gina, as a Psychologist.

Thank you Cathy, Kelly, Loris and Gil for your comments. It helps buffer the sting of pain when we reach out in support to one another.

How beautifully written. We grieved this horrible crime way up here in Seattle. It goes beyond what our minds can comprehend. But it is very true that coming together in positive ways, and teaching our children healthy ways to protect themselves is a proactive way to feel we can "do something" in what feels like a helpless situation.
What a beautiful tribute to an obviously beautiful girl.

Nicely put, Gina. What a travesty of justice this has been. I feel for Chelsea's family and friends. It looks like all of San Diego feels the loss.
